About Learning by Design

Built around
the learner.

A practical resource for instructional designers who want to connect learning science, user experience and thoughtful AI use.

For the work behind the course

We focus on the decisions that make learning useful: understanding a real problem, choosing meaningful practice, designing an accessible experience and checking what changed. Beginners can follow a first-project path. Experienced designers can use the research methods, review checklists and tool directory in their current work.

A point of view shaped by practice

This project is led by Ashley Kays, whose background spans UX, product, marketing and professional education. Her experience includes learning platforms such as Docebo, LearnWorlds, LearnDash and proprietary systems, plus SCORM work through Chegg, Thinkful and Flatiron School.

Our editorial approach

Tool recommendations explain a useful job, where the tool fits and what to check before adopting it. They are researched from official product information, not presented as independent performance tests. Our guides distinguish learner evidence from assumptions and AI-generated material.

We publish original worksheets you can use without an email gate. The newsletter launch list is optional. If we introduce paid partnerships or affiliate links, we will disclose them where they appear.

Learn by making something useful

Start with a small real problem. Build one practice activity. Watch someone use it. Revise. That habit is more valuable than collecting every tool.
